Avengers: Age of Ultron is a 2015 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team, the Avengers. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it serves as the sequel to The Avengers (2012) and marks the 11th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was both written and directed by the talented Joss Whedon and boasts an ensemble cast of remarkable actors, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Hayley Atwell, Idris Elba, Linda Cardellini, Stellan Skarsgård, James Spader, and Samuel L. Jackson. In the storyline, the Avengers confront Ultron, an artificial intelligence entity created by Tony Stark (Downey) and Bruce Banner (Ruffalo). Ultron’s plan? To bring about world peace by eradicating humanity.
The Birth of a Sequel
The idea for a sequel to The Avengers was set in motion in May 2012, following the tremendous success of the first film. Joss Whedon was announced to return as the writer and director in August of the same year. Whedon reimagined Ultron’s origin to incorporate the MCU’s Avengers team, and he introduced new characters, Pietro (Taylor-Johnson) and Wanda Maximoff (Olsen), whose rights were shared with 20th Century Fox. Casting commenced in June 2013, with Downey being the first to reprise his role. Filming began in February 2014 with second-unit work in South Africa, while principal photography occurred between March and August. The primary shooting location was Shepperton Studios in Surrey, England. Additional scenes were captured in Italy, South Korea, Bangladesh, the state of New York, and various locations throughout England. The film boasts an estimated net production budget of $365 million, making it one of the most expensive movies ever made.
A Monumental Premiere
Avengers: Age of Ultron had its premiere in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on April 13, 2015, and was released in the United States on May 1, 2015, as part of Phase Two of the MCU. The film was met with generally positive reviews from critics and went on to gross over $1.4 billion worldwide, securing its place as the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2015 and the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time during its theatrical run. This monumental success paved the way for two sequels: Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
